The Humboldt City Council meets twice a month, on the first and third Monday evenings at 5:30 pm in the Council Chambers at the City Municipal Building. All City Council meetings are open to the public and all regular meetings include a time for public comment. The City of Humboldt has a Mayor/Council form of government with a City Administrator and five council members. The city is divided into three wards, with one council member elected from each ward and two elected at-large, which means that everyone in all three wards may vote for them. The Mayor is elected by the voters for a term of two years, and the council is elected for four-year terms.

City elections are held the first Tuesday in November of the last year of the official's term. The new term starts the January 1st following the election.
