City Hall

The City of Humboldt Recreation Department is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all citizens by providing the best possible recreational programs, special events, facilities and services that encourage lifelong learning, fitness and fun for all ages. Our department includes the Humboldt Recreation Center, Youth and Adult programs, the Humboldt Community Center, the Humboldt Family Aquatic Center, Community Garden, and other special events and programs

The City of Humboldt takes pride in providing clean safe parks, trails, green spaces, and recreational facilities for the benefit of citizens and visitors. The Humboldt Parks Department is responsive to and directed by the diverse and changing needs of our patrons as we plan for the future growth and expansion of park facilities and trails. We strive to enrich lives by providing safe and welcoming facilities for the enjoyment of people of all ages, income, backgrounds, and abilities to play and learn to be good stewards of the environment. We continually strive to improve existing facilities while seeking opportunities for future development.

The Humboldt Public Library is located at 30 6th Street North. It is roughly 1 block North of the Humboldt Post Office, which is located on the NW corner of Sumner Avenue and 6th Street North.

The Humboldt Police Department has six sworn academy certified police officers. The Humboldt Police Department and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department have a joint facility located on Sumner Ave and 5th Street.

The Humboldt Police Department continuously strives to protect and serve our city.

The Humboldt Fire & Rescue is staffed by 23 volunteers, the Chief is Jim Gronbach. The volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide, among other services, fire protection to the citizens of Humboldt, Dakota City, Rutland, and five townships.

The City of Humboldt collects residential garbage and recycling once each week as well as collecting commercial garbage throughout the week. The Sanitation Department consists of three employees who work from 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM Monday through Friday. Residents may call the City Clerk's Office to find out what day their garbage will be collected at 332-3435.

The Street Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of approximately 39 lane miles of street in Humboldt.

Union Cemetery is a beautiful, serene place on the outskirts of Humboldt. It has a blend of generations of citizens, from the earliest settlers of the area to today's loved ones. It is a great place to explore and visit to recall the lives of those that have came before us.

The City of Humboldt currently contracts out water and sewer maintenance services to PeopleService. PeopleService operates the water and wastewater plants, as well as reading meters, responding to line breaks, and the day-to-day customer service. If you have a water or sewer emergency, call City Hall at 515-332-3435 during the hours of 8am-5pm. After these hours or on weekends, call either the Law Enforcement Center at 515-332-2600 or PeopleService at 877-774-4311.

The Planning and Zoning Commission sets up the Comprehensive Plan for future use of land within the City limits. This is the policy statement that is then turned into the Zoning Ordinance, which is the law. The Zoning Board of Adjustment takes into consideration appeals of the decisions of the Zoning Administrator, special and/or conditional uses of property, and variances from the Zoning Ordinance.
