1000 LEWIS STREET

Street Department Building

The Street Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of approximately 39 lane miles of street in Humboldt.

Services Provided

  • During Winter months the street dept is responsible for snow removal and the deicing of controlled intersections with a salt/sand mixture throughout the community along with curves, hills, etc. Crew also uses a Salt brine liquid for a pretreatment before and after a storm system to help with snow and ice removal which can also be a more cost-effective option if conditions allow for the treatment.
  • Crews also put our city Christmas decorations on the decorative light poles on Sumner Ave, Hwy 169 & Hwy 3 corridor.
  • During the month of January crews will do a live Christmas tree pickup after the holiday season, the trees must be placed at the curb where crews can easily access the tree for pickup. Trees must be clear of any lights, stands, and or any decorations.
  • Winter is closely followed with a spring clean up done by the street dept. The city will announce the dates ahead of time to allow city residents to participate in the pickup. Large household items only that do not fit in a garbage bag are allowed to be disposed of at the set time and dates. Residents may also purchase a sticker from city hall for any appliance or electronics that they want to dispose of.
  • A city-wide brush pickup is usually done in conjunction with the spring cleanup, limbs must be no longer than 10ft in length and no larger than 6in in diameter and must be placed parallel to the curb away from any obstructions such as power poles, trees, etc. for easy pickup. The city will also do a brush pickup following a severe storm causing significant damage throughout the town and those dates will also be announced ahead of time.
  • The city has a brush drop-off site located behind the street dept maintenance building at 1000 Lewis St that is open all year long to any city resident following the same size regulations as previously stated.
  • During the Spring/Summer months, the street dept is also responsible for maintaining the city’s storm sewer system, such as storm sewer mains, and intakes to be kept clear of any debris with the help of a street sweeper.
  • Crew also does minor street patching, pothole filling, crack filling, curb & gutter repair, traffic line stripping, and mowing of vacant City lots and right of ways.
  • Fall season our street dept is busy keeping up with leaf pickup, using our street sweeper, and leaf vac crews will be going all throughout the city during the fall. Which also helps keep the storm drains open and clear from clogging during any rainfall.
  • The city also has a compost site open during the spring, summer, and fall seasons to any city resident wanting to get rid of any yard waste such as leaves, grass clippings, and garden residuals. The site is located ½ mile north of 16th Ave N on Kentucky Ave just west of the Union Cemetery. Compost material at the site is also free to take for any person wanting compost for their personal garden.
